Is a social entrepreneur born, or made?  I think its probably both.  You could also ask, what is an entrepreneur?  We're not talking Andrew Carnegie here; we're talking about Florence Nightingale, Maria Montessori.  A social entrepreneur is someone who can't stop until they change the entire society.  They won't be happy until it is done.  They have vision and they have how to.  How do I seize the opportunity? How do the pieces fit together?  And they don't quit.  The idea evolves every day.

-- Kahlil Gibram

Most men fall into one of four categories:

  1. Individuals who work best when they work entirely for themselves - they operate their own business.
  2. Individuals who want to be employed by others and share in the profits of the business.
  3. Individuals who want to be only salaried employees - people reluctant to take risks.
  4. Individuals who are not motivated to produce a profit for their employer
    --
    J. Paul Getty

Job Experiences:

At my first official job after college at Wachovia Financial Services, senior associates taught us newcomers the importance of healthy competition.  They told us to learn to respect and honor our competitors, for a healthy competitor translates into a healthy industry.  This mind set has stayed with me through the years.  I welcome competition.  I hope more companies are started with a business plan such as ours… to put family first, to create worthy jobs, to produce a beautiful product and to give back to our world community with each item made.  Quality breeds quality.  Reverence breeds reverence.

-- Maureen Quinlan

The Five Precepts - left to us by the Buddha

  1. Abstaining from killing
  2. Abstaining from stealing
  3. Abstaining from speaking falsely
  4. Abstaining from sexual misconduct
  5. Abstaining from misusing alcohol or other intoxicants

Remember the five simple rules to be happy:

  1. Free your heart from hatred.
  2. Free your mind from worries.
  3. Live simply.
  4. Give more.
  5. Expect less.

Jerry Della Femina's Creativity Rules:

Rule 1:    Creativity is ageless.

There are a lot of young people who will never be creative, and a lot of very old people who will never stop.  Creativity is about making a lot of quick connections - about the things you know, the things you have seen.  The more you've seen, the more you've done, the easier it is to make the jump.

Rule 2:     You don't habe to be Einstein (or even Ben Stein).

I have a learning disability that makes it difficult for me to read a map or solve simple math problems.  So I compensate by being creative, by seeing things in a different way.  The great thing about creativity is that you don't need anything special to do it.  You don't need to drive a special vechile or work on a special computer.  You don't even need free time.  All you need is an open mind.
